The Gold Is There All Along…

I had a great client session this morning… I am so proud of my client who’s moving forward so rapidly and is so gung-ho and passionate about the clarity of the direction her branding and her business is going.

She said to me: “Emma… I am doing this and that and I am becoming more visible in social media but how come I am not converting people?”

I assured her that she’s not alone… that this truly is one of the missing “gold” pieces that is the most overlooked by most entrepreneurs.

Part of what I coach clients on is what I call their “Marketing Funnel”.  Some people call it an “Ascension Model” and some call it a “Sales Mountain” or a “Sales Funnel” this is the 3rd P in my video course “5 Paths To Profits”, called Process.

It’s the area of the funnel that sadly is the most overlooked phase, and that is creating your

PRODUCT

Yes, your very own product.  That is the GOLD that has always been there but is normally stepped over.

This is daunting to most people who are starting out because they are so focused in the marketing piece.  They are busy with social media, creating videos, attending live events without really fine tuning this very critical component of their Marketing Funnel…

Most of the time, people identify their “Free Offer” or “Ethical Bribe” or the product or service they will offer in exchange for their prospects’ name and email but they are forgetting that a critical part of the progression is their own PRODUCT.

A product can be your own book, video training, your own system but this is different from your free offer because one thing about this product is that this is the product you actually

SELL

That’s right… a product that you SELL…

The missing piece that most marketers fail to put in their puzzle is that they actually need to conceptualize and create a product to sell.

What are you selling? If you don’t have anything to sell, what are you offering?  If you’re offering Coaching or Consulting and you’re  not getting clients, perhaps it’s time to put your efforts in creating your own product to give your customers a sampling of what you can do for them.

If you don’t have a Product to sell, why not?

Pavlov’s Theory and Accountability

My husband and I love listening to this song entitled “Brian Wilson” by a group called Barenaked Ladies. A section of the lyrics got my attention:

“It’s a matter of instinct, it’s a matter of conditioning,
It’s a matter of fact.
You can call me Pavlov’s dog
Ring a bell and I’ll salivate- how’d you like that?”

So I asked my husband… “Who is Pavlov and what are Pavlov’s dogs?”

He then went on to explain that Pavlov was a Russian physiologist in the 1930′s who used dogs to prove his theory of Conditional Reflex which ultimately became the key concept for Behaviorism.

Essentially, Ivan Petrovich Pavlov, would ring a bell or use other stimuli to pre-condition dogs to certain activities like eating.  He trained the dogs to attach the meaning of the sound of the bell to “eating time” that he successfully conditioned them to drool at the sound of a bell.  The bell is their signal that food is coming. So even if there is no evidence of food around – neither sight nor scent – the dogs were conditioned to anticipate the food and start salivating or “drooling”.

It’s very similar to the term “anchoring”. Remember when the old “Do Not Forget” symbol of a piece of string tied around your finger to remind you of something that is attached or anchored to that string?  It’s the same concept.  I remember if I have important pieces of paper that needs to go out that same day, I made sure that I place them on the floor in an area that I won’t ever miss on my way out of the house.

I thought about Pavlov and how I have already been implementing his teachings in my life without even knowing it.  I just realized that I have indeed successfully amp my productivity up by utilizing anchors and triggers.

One such trigger for me is when it’s time to REALLY focus on a task despite lack of inspiration on a given moment, I light up a candle to heat up my liquid potpourri simmer.  That’s my indication that no matter what’s going on around me, that it’s time to focus and switch the inspiration button on.  What I really love about this self-imposed trigger is the scent doubles as another stimuli as well as the flickering of the tiny flame on the candle soothes me. As an added bonus, I cut up some fresh flowers from our backyard and having such “inspired area” on my desk enables me to really get in the “zone” much faster.

The act of lighting the candle alone, instructs me to tell myself it’s time to put all my energies on what I am doing.  That simple act has become my Pavlov’s bell. When I light that candle, I “salivate” – well I don’t literally drool, but I can tell my mind, body and spirit get exciting just from the joyful expectation of what I will be creating in that moment of focus.

I suggest you try Pavlov’s strategy.  Think about what it is you can commit to use as your stimuli or trigger that it’s time to get to work and finish the tasks you’ve set on to finish.  Many happy clients ask me how I get so much done in so little time and I believe this is one of my best kept secrets I am sharing with you.

Your Best Summer Ever!

Happy Summer! I trust you are enjoying this amazing
time of the year with family and friends!

I don’t know about you but summer has always been a time when I am tempted
to slow down, kick back and cut back on my productivity.  However, every time I do this, I find myself playing struggling to play catch up in the fall, when businesses are jumpstarting back up for the holidays.

It dawned on me…If I am experiencing this, then perhaps you just might
be experiencing it too!  You know what I mean… Temptation to limit your working hours to make time for:

1. Beach parties
2. Barbeques
3. Exotic Trips

On yesterday’s interview, I had the privilege and honor to be interviewed by Dr. Gene Johnson and Dr. Damita Johnson of “Success and Power for God’s Power Community”.

Their energy was so awe-inspiring that I actually forgot to complete “The Emma5″! By the time I remembered, it was rather late too correct myself…

So, the lesson learned is that it doesn’t matter if you stumble… what matters is how you’re going to continue on and do your best!

Real quick…

I am sure if you’ve been an online marketer for the past year or so, you already know the importance of video marketing. I am truly passionate about teaching my clients how to utilize video marketing to tie their marketing efforts together!

However… I totally understand that sometimes, we’re not too comfortable with video and it takes quite a while to get used to video… I totally empathize with you as I too have been frightened with video for as long as I can remember until I made a decision to go for it because I know that my life’s message will impact a lot of people!

On January 27, 2009, I created and posted my first video on YouTube… now I have hundreds of them online!

So, today I thought of you and this new service that I just found more about…

SoundCloud.com – it’s pretty amazing as you’re able to share it via email and on other networking sites…

So there you go… no more excuses! When you don’t feel like appearing on video but have a message you want to share, you can use your iPhone or other smart phone, or even your computer’s built-in microphone and upload them on SoundCloud.com and share it with the world!

After all, to become a true Relational Marketer, your prospects have to know, like and trust you… Audio and video are two incredible ways for them to get a feel for your heart…

I will be launching “Random Thoughts By The Relational Marketer” and guess what? Most of my posts will be via SoundCloud.com.

One Step Back… 5 Steps Forward

Have you ever felt like you keep on doing the same things you’ve done, yet expecting a different result?

Interestingly enough, I go through such cycles from time to time. I had the distinct privilege of taking my Mom and son on a 5 day cruise and during that time, I really felt like I was “in the dark”… detached from my normal world which includes you – my subscribers – and my personal and business connections online and offline.


However, as detached as I was, I found that I was incredibly attached to the idea of treating this cruise as an opportunity to take one step backwards so I can move 5 steps forward!

What an incredible time I had, just being there with Garrett and my Mom, just being a Mom!

The main challenge for me was experiencing “withdrawals” from not having online and phone access for 3 days!

It was such a strange feeling to not be saying “hello” to my Facebook, Twitter and LInked-In friends, nor be able to read my emails, realizing that when I do get back, I will have over 1,000 emails, voice mails, comments, tweets, direct messages to get back to.

Sure… I was tempted to spend $25/hour on the ship’s wi-fi, and trust me I came so close to buying in, but I made a conscious decision to really be in the moment with my son and not take time away from him.

Needless to say, when we got back, I didn’t have the desire to dive in head first into interacting online.  Instead, I took a deep breath, took 3 days of introspection, doing some gardening, organizing our home and creating countless mind maps!  (Thanks to my good friend Leta Russell for turning me to the Buzan Mind Mapping Program.

In my brief “hiatus”, I realized many commonalities that I know will help most online entrepreneurs like myself. Here are 5 Things That Will Help You Take 5 Steps Forward By Taking One Step Back:

  1. It’s okay to not be visible in social media for a few days.  Your friends will still “love” you…
  2. Instead of constantly “Liking” and posting on people’s Facebook Walls and Twitter timelines, take time to create your own content.
  3. Spend time with your families or those you care about, otherwise, they could become resentful of your business, especially when they don’t see you producing results while taking time away from them.
  4. Look through all the assets you already have – journals, blog posts, videos you took  at live events, etc…  Get them out there so it can help others.  And last but not least for sure…
  5. Make a conscious effort to organize, beautify and tidy-up your home… it doesn’t have to be a huge and expensive project.  Challenge yourself and make it a fun project for the family to be creative with what you have…

Quick story to share…

I have been wanting to work on our backyard for 6 months now but have been postponing it as we got a quote of almost $1,000 to put pavers and plant my favorite roses, hydrangeas, jasmines and lavender.  I made a decision that I was going to do it when we got back from the cruise and I made it a project for Garrett and I so when Gary gets back on a business trip, he will see progress…

With due diligence, I researched on where to get the best flowers for less as well as what sort of specials Home Depot was having on paver tiles and voila!  We did the project for less than $200!

So many “mini-miracles” happened to me in the past week that I will eventually share…  Right now, I just want to reach out to you and let you know it’s okay to take
one step back to take 5 steps forward.

I know… I know… there are bills to pay and at times, it requires us to “hustle” but please keep in mind, when you scoop out sand with your hands and grip it tightly, you lose a lot of sand… when you loosen your grip, you lose even more… but finding that perfect balance, you keep it all…

I challenge you to find your balance between MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT.  You come as a package… one can’t be without the other.

Should I Stay Or Should I Go? A Lesson On Facebook Groups.

Lately, I have been inundated by instances where I was added to a Facebook group without any invitation and without my permission.  While I truly appreciate the thought, I have experienced groups that were just downright spammy and as emails from comments start pouring, the more I get aggravated by the emails that start coming in my Inbox!

If you’ve been online for the past 3 months, you have experienced and know exactly what I’m talking about… This video is for you…

No more enduring the annoyance!

The question now is:  Should you stay or should you go?

Well, if you like the group and the people in the group, you don’t have to leave the group… you can simply turn off the email notifications or customize the notifications instead of relying on the default which is to notify you every time someone leaves a comment or a post.

But…  if  you already have way too many communities you’re involved in and you have a tendency to be easily distracted, then it might be best to leave the group all together.

Personally, I have already left quite a few groups but I chose to still become a member of many other groups because I have relationships with the Organizers of the group but the only way I am able to handle my participation in those groups is to customize the notification.

Do You Need A Coach, Consultant or A Course?

I just came back from a truly powerful weekend at Mike Klingler’s Marketing Funnel Mastery.  Over 100 of my fellow marketers and entrepreneurs came together to build their own Marketing Funnels using Mike Klingler’s highly effective blueprint.

I was introduced to Marketing Funnel Mastery in June 2010 when I flew to Portland, OR.  It was so interesting to note that at that time, the Marketing Funnel I envisioned for myself was completely different from the funnel I am now working on.

I loved seeing my friends – Mike Klingler, Lisa Holcomb, Jerry Chen, Ferny Ceballos, DiDi Alcheva, Leta Russell, Cindy Schulson, Jackie Ulmer, Kelly Baader, Richard Goutal, Cindy Murphy, Natasha Nassar, Rich Hazlett, Glenn Arcaro, Matty Miller, Eleni Liapikis and Jim Harris to name a few.

Why am I so excited to share about my own funnel?  It’s because I absolutely love being able to really make sense and utilize EVERYTHING I have learned and accumulated for the past 2 1/2 years from all the Coaches, Consultants and Courses I have invested in!  They fit so perfectly in the funnel and there are highly specialized skills and education I can now share with the entrepreneurs who I am blessed to be given the chance to mentor and teach.

This weekend, as I listened to over 20 people share with me their own Marketing Funnels  I started thinking more about the Whats, Whys and Hows on how they can:

1) Identify and monetize their passion.

2) Craft an effective Marketing Funnel.

3) Create a Powerful V.I.P. Brand to attract their perfect clients.

This sounds simple but it really is a process… a process that is taking others years to put together.

If you’re in the process of creating yours, how would you know if you need a business Coach, Consultant or Course?  Do you know the difference between a Coach and a Consultant?

Funny, I have always thought of myself as a Coach but realized early this year that I was really acting as a combination of Coach and Consultant.

What’s the difference between a Coach, Consultant and A Course?  In my simplest description and definition…

A Coach, encourages you to think, to come up with your own solutions based on your values and priorities and what really comes natural for you.  Yes, a Coach will encourage you to tap into your fullest potential without losing YOU in the equation.

A Consultant on the other hand, enables his/her clients to follow a proven step by step process that has produced successful results for others.  It’s a generic plan – a blueprint if you may – that will allow the client to incorporate their essence in the blueprint, then start implementing.

Then the less expensive route is a Course… and they come in many forms, print, video, audio, live events or a combination of one or more of them.  Some people sometimes call this a System.  If you’re an online marketer, you’ve probably purchased enough books courses in your search of how to grow the business,  that is enough to fill an entire 8 ft bookshelf like mine!

I spoke with a lot of people this weekend and some of them prefer to hire a Coach who will help pull out the creative genius inside of you, while some prefer to have a Consultant who will tell them exactly what to do, infusing your essence into the blueprint as necessary.

What was evident though was that most entrepreneurs I spoke with are tired of simply buying a course without any back-up training and support.

So my question to you is which of the “4 Cs For A Profitable Business” would you invest money in at this moment to help you grow your business? A Coach?  A Consultant? A Course?  A Combination of 1 or more?

Goal Setting: 10 Things To Help You Get RESULTS!

It’s Spring Break and  I truly LOVE spending time with my family! I find that I absolutely enjoy week long vacations and getaways with them just lounging in bed, watching movies, dining out and checking out tourist hot spots!  It’s so awesome to be able to take Garrett riding the X-2 Extreme Roller Coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain one day then taking him to the Los Angeles Jewelry District for a crash course on Gems and Jewelry the next day.  At 8-years old, he’s passionate about gems, rocks and minerals and even started his own Blog – www.GemstoneKid.com

While I LOVE being in that mode of just being a Mom and wife leaving my computer behind.  You can just imagine the withdrawals I get from not being able to interact with my social media friends! Ha, ha!

What’s REALLY challenging for me is after I come back from a week long getaway, it’s harder to get back in that inspired mode.  I have always been great at Goal Setting but yesterday it seems that I simply couldn’t get back in the game.  My saving grace was that I have my 52 Action Items I prepared a week before and my Mind-Map that I created a few weeks ago.  That got me right back on track!

It got me to thinking though how interesting it is to note that while it’s easy to assume that entrepreneurs should be experts at goal setting, the truth is most of us are guilty of not setting goals that will produce results or what Tony Robbins commonly refer to as “outcome”.

So, I’d like to share with you  10 Things That Will Help You Create GREAT Goals That Generate Results!

1)  Write your goals on paper!

2) Set-up categories you would like to set goals for – Family, Work, Social Life, Finance, etc..

3) Create a broad list of goals for each category

4) Breakdown each goal to smaller action items – make it as detailed as possible.  Each goal now becomes a “project”.

5) Draw a Mind-map or a Flow Chart of the Main Goals and what Action Items step forth from each goal

6) Prioritize each Action Item and divide them into Goals this week, this month, 3-months, 6-months, 1-year, 5 years

7) Schedule action items into your planner or DayTimer.  Once you’ve logged them there, do whatever it takes to accomplish them! (Note: if your action item requires a certain skill – allocate time to learning that skill)

8) This is one of the most important elements of a great goal:  STAY ACCOUNTABLE not only to yourself but to someone who has your best interest in mind! I find weekly accountability to be extremely powerful in achieving results!

9) Give yourself grace when you don’t achieve a goal you’ve set but it’s important to understand why you didn’t achieve the goal in the first place – is it fear, lack of skill, distraction or is it because your plans have changed?  If it’s fear, skills or distraction then you need to keep on pressing on until you achieve your goal and not let disguised excuses stop you.  If your plans  have changed, then it’s okay to re-analyze and repeat the process until you achieved your outcome!

10) Last but not least, have a plan to CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES no matter how small and insignificant they may seem!  Every little achievement brings you closer to your goals!
