Do You Really Need to Be Liked?

By Emma on July 25, 2011 2 Comments

Over the weekend, my husband and I sat quietly watching Denzel Washington’s movie, “Unstoppable” through Netflix.   There was a scene there where there was this massive unmanned runaway train and Denzel was going to risk his life to stop the train and save the town from all the toxic cargo it had.  The owner of the company was livid because he already has plans to derail the train and yet Denzel is risking his life for the cause.  When his boss asked him why he’s doing it despite being fired and given his 90-days notice for no reason, he said: “I’m not doing this for you…”

I had a really profound  conversation with my husband about that.  We went back and forth, “agreeing to disagree” but admittedly, he brought up a good question.

Do people really buy only from people they like?  Do you really need to be liked to gain customers?

His background is Aerospace Engineering but prior to that, he was a Director of Sales for a big rubber and alloy company and their clients were predominantly huge aerospace companies with billion dollar programs.  He said that there were so many personality conflicts and ego floating around in that industry that one doesn’t really need to be liked for transactions to happen. You just need to have the best product and pricing.

Honestly, I was almost stumped when he said that because I saw his point.

HOWEVER, here’s how I responded to that.  When we talk about product and you are the only one or the best one at what’s being offered, being liked is probably not as relevant.  All the customer wants is a good reliable product  and of course,

A TRUSTED REPUTATION.

I told him that his clients may not necessarily like him – which they do – but somehow, they have to be able to TRUST the company and the brand.

As a Relational Marketer, having clients who are Authors, Speakers, Coaches and Business Owners, I always talk about how your marketing efforts are off K.I.L.T.E.R. if your prospects don’t get to:

K – Know

I – Involve

L – Like

T – Trust

E – Embrace

R – Respect

It is an ongoing process to make sure that your marketing efforts are on track and I have simplified all of that with The Emma5.

So, my answer to the question, “Do You Really Need To Be Liked” is  YES.  Do you need to like me immediately? Probably not.  Just like Trust, to be Liked is subjective and it does take time.  However, do you need to be liked before any business transaction could take place?  Not always, but most often than not, the answer is YES!

Our potential clients are getting more savvy and rightfully so as there are so many choices out there for experts and people we will allow to speak into our lives and influence us.

Being KNOWN is the first step and that is achieved through being visible online.  As you become more visible, and start INVOLVE-ing your prospects now get to decide whether they LIKE you enough to consume your offerings and content.  After being liked comes being TRUSTED.  Trust is the result of repetition and consistency.  When you then allow them to EMBRACE you by sharing of your authenticity, you earn their RESPECT and they not only do business with you but they become raving fans and a referrals for life.

This right here is my secret in making sure that my marketing is never off K.I.L.T.E.R.

Our Facebook Group, The Relational Marketers – is a great community to exercise sharing of your authenticity and expertise and as you give to the group, you get so much in return. Come see for yourself…

Creativity… The Answer to Frustration

By Emma on July 19, 2011 2 Comments
Share

Yesterday I spent half a day filming and editing 15 short videos.  Ten of those videos are for my new “How To Use Relational Marketing To Grow Your Business” video training give away to my subscribers.  It’s actually a very good video series and I could easily charge for them but I really like to reward those who take the time to give me their trust.

"Things Are Not Always As They Appear ;) "

So… the story goes.  I put on my brand new, custom made red shirt made for me by the awesome Raj of Peter Rainey Custom Tailors. I was so excited to wear that shirt as I love the personalized monogram of “ETY” on its french cuff.  I was excited to wear this shirt as this is the first red shirt I am going to wear on video!  Red, black, gold and white are my brand colors but I am very comfortable wearing black and white but wasn’t sure about bold colors.

I was feeling so excited and so inspired to finally go out and be “bold”, when I realized that I couldn’t find my cufflinks. Mind you, these weren’t even my cufflinks… they are my husband’s and I borrowed them over the weekend and now I can’t find them!

I could have chosen to fret and get frustrated and tear the house out to find the cufflinks, or perhaps even chose to just give up on the shirt and go back to what’s comfortable, my trusted crisp white shirt.  However, I made a decision that today was going to be special and I will wear my red shirt.

Immediately, I closed my eyes and visualized everything that I could use as an alternative to a pair of cufflinks.  In the quietness and stillness of my mind, I did an imaginary scan of my jewelry box to see if there was anything there I could use.

Voila! An image came to mind.  I have my favorite pair of South Sea Pearl earrings.  They are my favorite piece of jewelry as they are the “Rolls Royce of Pearls” – they are big, have substantial white gold posts and backing and are very elegant!  I tried them on and they worked like a charm!

I ran downstairs and showed them to Garrett and told him a lesson of resourcefulness. That when we’re faced with a choice to become frustrated, start complaining and start getting distracted from our inspired state, that all we need to do is look within and understand that:

All we need is already within us!

We just need to practice an awareness to consistently be in a resourceful and creative mode.  This goes true with our day to day lives…

Nothing profound here… Just a reminder to harness your CREATIVITY… Create more, feel frustration less… An object in motion stays in motion..

Until we connect…

Pavlov’s Theory and Accountability

By Emma on July 15, 2011 2 Comments
Share

My husband and I love listening to this song entitled “Brian Wilson” by a group called Barenaked Ladies. A section of the lyrics got my attention:

“It’s a matter of instinct, it’s a matter of conditioning,
It’s a matter of fact.
You can call me Pavlov’s dog
Ring a bell and I’ll salivate- how’d you like that?”

So I asked my husband… “Who is Pavlov and what are Pavlov’s dogs?”

He then went on to explain that Pavlov was a Russian physiologist in the 1930′s who used dogs to prove his theory of Conditional Reflex which ultimately became the key concept for Behaviorism.

Essentially, Ivan Petrovich Pavlov, would ring a bell or use other stimuli to pre-condition dogs to certain activities like eating.  He trained the dogs to attach the meaning of the sound of the bell to “eating time” that he successfully conditioned them to drool at the sound of a bell.  The bell is their signal that food is coming. So even if there is no evidence of food around – neither sight nor scent – the dogs were conditioned to anticipate the food and start salivating or “drooling”.

It’s very similar to the term “anchoring”. Remember when the old “Do Not Forget” symbol of a piece of string tied around your finger to remind you of something that is attached or anchored to that string?  It’s the same concept.  I remember if I have important pieces of paper that needs to go out that same day, I made sure that I place them on the floor in an area that I won’t ever miss on my way out of the house.

I thought about Pavlov and how I have already been implementing his teachings in my life without even knowing it.  I just realized that I have indeed successfully amp my productivity up by utilizing anchors and triggers.

One such trigger for me is when it’s time to REALLY focus on a task despite lack of inspiration on a given moment, I light up a candle to heat up my liquid potpourri simmer.  That’s my indication that no matter what’s going on around me, that it’s time to focus and switch the inspiration button on.  What I really love about this self-imposed trigger is the scent doubles as another stimuli as well as the flickering of the tiny flame on the candle soothes me. As an added bonus, I cut up some fresh flowers from our backyard and having such “inspired area” on my desk enables me to really get in the “zone” much faster.

The act of lighting the candle alone, instructs me to tell myself it’s time to put all my energies on what I am doing.  That simple act has become my Pavlov’s bell. When I light that candle, I “salivate” – well I don’t literally drool, but I can tell my mind, body and spirit get exciting just from the joyful expectation of what I will be creating in that moment of focus.

I suggest you try Pavlov’s strategy.  Think about what it is you can commit to use as your stimuli or trigger that it’s time to get to work and finish the tasks you’ve set on to finish.  Many happy clients ask me how I get so much done in so little time and I believe this is one of my best kept secrets I am sharing with you.

What strategies are you using right now? I would love to hear from you so please leave a comment.  If this post has helped remind you how much more effective you can be if you create a trigger that says “Game On”, please feel free to share this with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, Digg, etc.

HOPE Is A Strategy, Only When…

By Emma on July 4, 2011 8 Comments
Share

Here in beautiful Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, truly savoring the beauty of this great nation.  As I immerse myself in the omnipotence of the moment, I am overcome with joy and gratitude that I was given the opportunity to come here and create a magnificent life.

I wish you and your families a Happy July 4th – a Happy Independence Day, if you are one of my friends here in the US and if you live elsewhere, I wish you a Happy Freedom Day…

Yes… Freedom.

I remember February of 1989, I migrated to this “land of the free”.  I barely spoke
English, was fearful and terrified to be transplanted in a foreign country, where
people around me yelled at me because they couldn’t understand what I was
saying.  That frequent occurrence didn’t help with my already very low and damaged self-esteem.

My self-esteem might have been at an all time low, but there were a few things
I held on so tightly to:

  • Love of family and desire to help make their lives better
  • Hope for a brighter future
  • Strong faith in God’s purpose for my life

People say “hope” is not  a strategy and I absolutely agree… However,  to be completely honest with  you… when I was going through one of the roughest times in my life, it was HOPE that kept me going…. It was the dream that one day I too will succeed that kept me from giving up. It was the images of my Mom, Dad and siblings who were all still in the Philippines that fueled my fire for success!

Did it come easy? Absolutely NOT!  Every time I was gearing for a promotion, I experienced major challenges upon major challenges.  I moved from home to home, experienced bankruptcy, drove a beat-up car, didn’t have a lot of friends
and it felt like the only logical choice was to go back to the Philippines.

However, even if giving up was the best option available, I decided to keep on moving.  I kept on

DREAMING… HOPING… BELIEVING

And, there was one thing I did as I continued to dream, hope and believe.

I KEPT ON TAKING ACTION and TAKING RISKS.

I experienced heartaches, frustration, breakdowns, misery, pain, unbelief
defeat and every negative thought you could possibly imagine.

One thing I refused to do was to WALLOW IN MY DESPERATION and
self-pity.  I would go through the motion of the tears, the pain, the heartache…
I embraced them and then eventually I’d let them go…

People often wonder the secret to my success… looking back, I can say that
what kept me going then are the same things that keep me going now.  Do I have the same pain and frustration? Sure… but not pain and frustration from lack but
what I call “Happy Discontent”.  But that’s for another day…

For now, I just want to send this to you to encourage you to declare today as your
FREEDOM DAY… the day you will commit to being free from:

Mediocrity
Being Average
Sad discontent
Giving up on your dreams
Letting yourself down
Letting your families down

I want to be able to some day give you a great big hug and say “Happy Hope-niversary on your Freedom Day!” I declared mine in May 11, 2006 when a friend mocked me and told me “You will never succeed as an entrepreneur”… that same friend is no longer an entrepreneur but am still here… encouraging, empowering, engaging and equipping entrepreneurs.

If this hope inspired you, please comment, re-tweet and share… I also  invite you to join our Facebook group www.TheRelationalMarketers.com

Cleansing Tears… Refining… Refreshing

By Emma on June 17, 2011 4 Comments

Image Courtesy of lwestcoat's Photostream on Flickr

Whew what a week it was!  So many amazing breakthroughs happening here!  So much excitement yet with much excitement also comes ambivalence about the proverbial “unknown” and stepping things up a notch, up leveling ones game and braving through fears and frustrations.

Today, I found myself shedding “Cleansing Tears…”

No, they are not tears of sorrow, rather they are tears of celebration.  I have reached a point in my business where I have stepped up my game considerably and looking back at the results I have generated for entrepreneurs who trusted me and invested their time and resources with me, I couldn’t hold back the tears from realizing that I have actually made a difference in their lives.

What’s even more moving for me is truly realizing the fact that my specialized skills and innate empathy for and encouragement of people is transferable and can be duplicated over and over and over again.

I look at the profound and meaningful relationships I have made in the past 2 years and I am humbled at the thought that some of my venerable mentors and heroes now even consider me as their peer and friend.

I well up with emotion to think of the struggles I went through, the sacrifices my family endured to support me to pursue my dreams and to get where I am today.

I get choked up in the knowing that because of my decision to step into my power and understand what I was truly worth, I am now able to  support a few families, but being able to hire them and give them opportunities for exposure to my world of personal, mindset and spiritual development as well as business and marketing knowledge.

But most of all…

I cry happy tears in the realization that my husband and son are my number one fans! That they are so proud of me and my continued contribution to the lives of others…. It wasn’t long ago that they really didn’t understand what I do and didn’t really understand why I was spending precious resources in courses, mentors and seminars and many hours away from them.

Whether I cry tears of joy, fear, frustration, celebration, love, adoration, empathy, encouragement – to me those are cleansing tears.  When I sob and have to grab a tissue and blow my nose, it signifies a big pause in preparation for big and better things to come.  Yes, you can call me a “Hallmark” crier and that’s okay too.

When was the last time you shed Cleansing Tears? As long as you don’t take an extended period of time to wallow in it, I believe it’s great to experience them from time to time… it leaves a “clean slate” feeling where everything and anything is possible! (I am sure Psychologists will have some wonderful terminology for this)  All I know is after a nice cry, I am:

Renewed… Refined and Refreshed.

Let me know when was the last time you had a great cry for a good reason and please share how that has helped you feeling renewed and refreshed!

BTW, I launched my LIVE WebTV www.EmmaTiebens.tv show yesterday on my Facebook Page and it was a blast! Perhaps next week, you can come join us!

Getting Personal… My Perfect Day

By Emma on May 31, 2011 2 Comments
Share

My ideal day starts off really early at dawn when the birds are slowly waking up, when my family is still asleep, the morning is very peaceful and the sun is not up just yet.

I start my morning in fervent and intense prayer – prayers of gratitude, adoration, intercession and yes, some supplication.  I then read my Bible, consciously taking in the inspiration and life’s lessons.  I read peacefully as I drink my healthy shake to start my day.

Then off to a  30 minute workout, listening to inspirational or informational audio while I walk or jog on the treadmill and afterwards, I spend time doing light stretching or yoga.  I would alternate Turbo Jam and Hip Hop from time to time.

Then an aromatic, invigorating and steamy shower – using only the best, most  natural and holistic products.  Essential oils or salts and minerals from the Dead Sea – are ideal!

My closet is well organized and in there are suits, dresses, shoes, purses, and accessories from my favorite designers.  It’s such a joy and is so rewarding to put  on comfortable yet exquisite “work” clothes made from the finest fabric and materials. They make me feel amazing!

I then join my family for a healthy breakfast in our breakfast nook, overlooking the ocean. My Mom joins us too, as she lives with us. We enjoy a delicious and healthy breakfast, planning with joyful expectancy, what wonderful things we will do our best to accomplish for the day.

We say good-bye to Daddy as he goes to work doing what he loves.  He looks amazing as he too finds the time to work-out and take care of himself.  He’s wearing beautifully custom-fitted and tailored slacks and shirts, and shoes from his favorite Italian designers.  He also loves driving his new black Mercedes Benz CL550 Coupe.

I take Garrett to school in my very tidy, tan on black Range Rover Evoque. My car is equipped with all the technology to make it a portable office and a rolling “university”.  In the car, Garrett and I talk more about life lessons and his passions.  We also chat about any concerns he may have about anything!   On my way home, I have some more conversations with God in my car and I feel so focused and empowered to face the day!

When I get back to the house, I go to my garden to pick up fresh blooms of – white, lilac, yellow and red roses, lavenders and peonies – I put them in a beautiful vase on my desk and as I begin my day, I light up more aromatic candles and scents.

I spend 30 minutes saying “hello” to my social media friends and give them words of encouragement while sipping my organic Cafe Latte or Pleine Lune tea from Mariage Freres – my favorite Tea House in Paris, France!

Then, I spend another hour going through my emails and replying succinctly and effectively where the people I come in contact with are able to move forward and generate results and I do to.

I also get to freely write “big” checks to specific special causes that are near and dear to my heart as I get to give at least 10% of every income I generate!

I also get to hand write Thinking of You, Thank You, Get Well, Birthday or simply a Just Because cards to the relationships that make my life better.

I then focus the remaining 4 hours creating strategies, articles, videos and working with clients, giving them tasks to move forward.  I am also creating tasks and fresh daily action items and plans for my  Core Team and Executive Assistants so they too will have plenty of work to do and assure them of having a consistent income generation stream.

I pick up Garrett from school, then we either go to the park, library or just go on a date… Perhaps even a little bit of shopping or grab some Boba or Tea and just hang out and talk about EVERYTHING!

We come home, he does his homework, then I get to check it as I – or our Family’s Chef – creates gourmet meals for us and sets the table.

Gary comes home right on time around 5:30 to spend time with Garrett and do Dad/Son stuff – basketball, karate or simply sit and talk about Math and History.  From time to time, I get to join them but for the most part, this is their time together.  While they have “Dude Time”, I get back to check on some of my emails and perhaps do my EmmaTiebens.tv webshows or host my webinars.

We then have candle-lit sit-down dinners just having amazing conversations… laughing… appreciating… loving…

After dinner, we choose what we want to do – go to the hot tub, watch Food Channel or simply take turns reading Bible Stories or other Inspirational Stories, Spirit Driven or Personal Development books.  As Garrett matures, we can add some business and marketing books in the mix.

We tuck Garrett in, say our prayers and I get to spend quality and meaningful time with my husband, getting at least 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep!

I wake up the next day, refreshed and eager to get my day started again because it’s full of love, opportunity and potential for inspiration and positive impact!  I also feel great knowing that I have enough flexibility in my day because I have this in the order of my priorities:

God First.
Family Second
Business Third

Are my priorities perfect?  Not quite… Am I on target?  Absolutely!  It’s just a matter of time but I am feeling these as though they are already happening now!

How does your perfect day look like?  I urge you to create one, otherwise, you will continue to do the same things you’ve done, yet expecting drastic change…

This is just a start for me… I intend to make this as specific as possible, down to the color and texture of fabrics and the aroma and taste of the food and the scent of my bath gels!

Please share yours!!! If you ever need help in leveraging your time or cutting back on some long learning curves in your business, please let me know.

I will share with you time tested strategies and blueprint that has enabled me to continue creating and moving towards “My Perfect Day” and you can do it too!

What Is Your Heart Brand?

By Emma on May 27, 2011 No Comments
Share

"Heart 4 Love"designed by Julie Thong http://www.HappyHealthyHolisticHeart.com

Yesterday, I had the privilege to be a Guest Presenter at my friend Leta Russell’s
“MindMapping For Business” Webinar.  We had quite a turnout!

I have done quite a number of webinars for myself in the past few months with topics ranging from spirit driven personal development to social media to video marketing to branding for Visibility, Influence and Profits.

When Leta asked me to be one of her guests, she said I have 30 minutes or so to talk about what I am really passionate at which is helping people go “from invisible to visible”.

Then one day last week, I had a conversation with another dear friend, the ever so brilliant and wise Kathy Eppley, Founder of Astound Yourself.  It was brief conversation that gave me quite an epiphany!

In our short but highly profound conversation, Kathy enabled me to see that “something special” that  has truly equipped me to help countless people in profound ways in the past few years.  The revelation was so exciting I couldn’t contain myself!

I have always thought that it was my specialized and applied knowledge of  social media, video and email marketing that was creating effortless success for me but I realized that there was one thing that truly set me apart from a lot of “experts” out there and that is my genuine desire to love on entrepreneurs and see them succeed.  I realized that what has truly been key to my success is connecting with others from the heart.

Sure I am very proficient with leveraging technology and I do my best to teach  strangers, prospects and clients cutting edge information…

BUT…

I realized that what has truly set me apart from other experts in our industry is my

HEART BRAND

I realized that our brand is not just how we present ourselves to the world.  It’s not limited to just the physical and outer appearance.  If the term “You Are The Brand” is true, then for YOU to become a real brand, you need to include a huge chunk of you which is your heart.

I streamlined the elements of branding that has worked for me to the “6 Elements of Branding” - these are original ideas that I have been living and teaching and now able to quantify and simplify so it’s more “consumable”.  I discussed in great detail during Leta’s Webinar, and they are:

1) Heart Brand

2) Mind Brand

3) Spirit Brand

4) Offline Brand

5) Online Brand

6) Success Brand

For this post… I urge you to focus on your Heart Brand… what are your interests? Who are your inspiration? What’s your life’s mission?

It’s your Heart Brand Awareness that will enable you to truly connect with your target audience and attract them in profound and meaningful ways that is not achieved just by writing a good copy on your sales page.

I would love to hear your thoughts… Have you thought of your Heart Brand before? If you haven’t, what will you do with your new discovery?

Looking forward to hearing of your epiphanies as well!

Till next time…

I Am Cheering You On To Your Success!!!

What Can INFLUENCE Do For You?

By Emma on May 12, 2011 No Comments
Share

Dictionary.com defines influence as: “the capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of others.

In other words, to have influence is to become someone who creates the “ripple effect” in the lives and situations of those around him.

Like leadership, people are not born leaders nor influencers.  While some are absolutely gifted with magnetism, or were blessed to grow up being surrounded by charming role models they can emulate, some of us have to learn it through life.

Do you think of yourself as an Influencer? Why or why not?

I never thought of myself as an Influencer.  Growing up, I’ve been described as “charming” but never beautiful, pretty nor attractive.  Neither intelligent, nor eloquent.  I was more shy, unassuming and yes, “charming”…

However, one thing that was certain throughout my life was my desire to help and inspire.  I have always had the heart for the underdog and underprivileged.

I never really aspired for leadership but I looking back, my genuine desire to make a difference has always positioned me to influential and leadership roles and I remember  always be voted as Class President  or the President of Girl Scouts or something.

And now, as I humbly yet boldly look at influence I have personally gained in the last 2 years, I am in awe as to how it all happened…

How could a young girl, born and raised in a teeny tiny small town in the Philippines, grow up to be in a position to help inspire thousands of people globally thorough my blog posts and my online presence?

How am I now able to translate that influence to help entrepreneurs – authors, speakers, professionals – create profitable marketing campaigns and branding that is Visible, Influential and Profitable?

Have you ever wondered…

How could someone like Mother Teresa – born from very humble beginnings as Gonxha (Agnes) Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Yugoslavia, on August 27, 1910, grew up very quiet and shy, became one of the most influential people in the world?

How did Robert Kiyosaki, best-selling Author of the “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” series turn his life around from almost being homeless living in his car, to the most influential financial educator of our time???

Most leaders we now adore and emulate come from nothing…. unless you’re Donald Trump, who was born with the proverbial silver spoon – most of us were born without the gift of influence.

How does one gain influence?

Well, from personal experience and interviewing some of my highly influential peers, gaining influence starts from this simple fact:

“You are who you think you are… your thoughts determine your actions and your actions ultimately bring you influence or the lack of it.”

Influence can probably be bought with money but why not gain it naturally?

I also know that influence is a gift… an anointing from God.  I believe in my heart that I was given that gift when I made a conscious decision to ask for it and through the many prayers of caring people over my life.  I know that God has gifted me with influence that I can use for the greater good of those who have been entrusted in my care and to those I have yet to meet.

That’s it… plain and simple…

We were not born with influence but it’s something we can ask for in prayer or consciously seek and learn.

So, it might be time to ask yourself…

Are you a winner, or a whiner?

Are you an original or are you a copy?

Are you a go-giver or a go-taker?

What can influence do for you?

A LOT!  Just like relationships, influence is a currency… one that enables you to achieve the achievable!

Influence brings:

1) Better relationships
2) New clients
3) Heightened respect
4) Self-esteem
5) Celebrity status
6) Profitable joint-ventures
7) Rewarding opportunities
8) Leadership
9) Heroism
10) Ability to change lives positively impacting the world around you.

Are you ready to become a force to reckon with?  I can show you how.

Shortly, I will be taking applications for 2 very select individuals whom I will get the chance to work with me with my “Diamond V.I.P. Package“ soon to launch.  There will be no fanfare, no big launch as it’s one of the higher end packages that I will be offering…

Perhaps in the next few blog posts, I am going to share with you my “secrets” in building influence online and offline and yes, it absolutely ties in with relationship marketing…

But if you’re one of the few who are ready to step up your game and monetize your message, I would love to hear your story and you can send me a private message on why you believe you’re ready to work with me in expediting your influential expert “celebrity” status.

Until next time….

My Mother… My First Mentor

By Emma on May 3, 2011 4 Comments

It’s May 3, 2011 – a day that has always been very special to me.

In the small town of Sta. Elena, Marikina City in the Philippines where I grew up, this day is significant as this is when we celebrate our town’s “Fiesta”.  A Sta. Elena fiesta is like “Halloween” where you can basically go from house to house and you will be served yummy home cooked meals and delicacies.

I remember growing up, having May 3 as one of my most favorite and much awaited day, just like Christmas and my birthday.  Why?

It’s because May 3 is also my Mom Elena Yambao’s birthday!

My Mom was a renegade.  As the youngest of 8 children whose parents were fatally injured with an accidental American bomb during World War 2, she was lovingly raised by her sister Emilia Santos de Guzman.  She was only 12 years old when their parents passed away and essentially grew up with no parents.

She was a very talented and smart young lady and beautiful too! I heard she received love letters from a few admirers and some of them used to serenade her with romantic ballads.

Though very shy and refined, she went through college and even finished 2 degrees… one in Accounting and one in Education.  She worked at a very young age and had the passion for things that are beautiful, especially jewelry, coins and music. She loves to play the piano and is quite good! She was happy being single and she thought she was never going to get married until she met my Dad.

Interestingly enough, when they say “The fruit never falls far from the tree…” it’s absolutely true!

Of their 4 children, family friends say I am the one that looks just like her.  In fact, I catch myself sounding like her most of the time.

My Mom is my very first Mentor as I believe that most Moms are,  The lessons she has taught me now enables me to help others and truthfully has become the basis of what I teach as The Relational Marketer.

So, here are the Top 10 Lessons I Have Learned From My Mother… My First Mentor:

1) Read Dale Carnegie’s “How To Win Friends and Influence People” – this should be your guidebook in life as first impression is the last thing!
2) Remember people’s names and say it to them… you’ll be more appreciated.
3) Read… read… read!
4) Be happy just by being with yourself – find joy in the quietness of just spending time with you.
5) Be thoughtful and remember people’s birthdays and those who matter to them – even the birthdays of their cats and dogs! (My sister Ellen still does this masterfully ;)
6) Trust people first… find good in those you meet until they prove you wrong.
7) Work is good but family comes first.
8) Strengthen your FAITH in God.
9) Learn Crossword Puzzles and you’ll always have a healthy brain.
10) Appreciate beauty in art, music and finer things in life.

So, for her birthday, I want to thank her for everything she has done for us and for what she continues to do for us.  Amazingly at 79 years old, she discovered Facebook and is constantly engaging using her iPod Touch… I am so proud of her! Now she’s out there encouraging family and friends and educating the youth of her beloved city on its rich heritage.

She doesn’t know I am writing this blog for her but soon enough, she’ll find out as my posts reflect on her Feed so go to her Facebook Page and greet her a “Happy Birthday”!  Click on www.Facebook.com/elenayambao – tell her you’re my friend and she’ll friend you too!

To honor her, if there is anything I have inspired you with or help you move forward with, please let her know that too, so she’ll realize that her teachings have been paid forward and are making a difference in other people’s lives.

How about you? Who is your first Mentor and what memorable things have you learned from them?

On this note, I also want to wish you a Happy Mother’s Day, if you’re a Mom and I encourage you to celebrate and plan something nice this Mother’s Day Weekend to commemorate the special Moms in your life!
